When you use a taxi booking service, extra fees may apply in addition to the meter fare. Always check the Terms and Conditions of any booking service that you use.

Taxis Hailed on the Street
When you hail a taxi off the street, you will pay the meter fare. In addition, if you pay by credit/debit card, there may be extra charges. Always ask the driver what the extra charges will be.
Taxis Obtained from a Rank
When you obtain a taxi from a taxi rank, you will pay the meter fare. Taxis at certain airport ranks, such as Heathrow, may charge an extra fee. In addition, if you pay by credit/debit card, there may be extra charges. Always ask the driver what the extra charges will be.
Taxi Meter Fares
Regardless of whether you book in advance, hail a taxi off the street, or obtain a taxi from a rank, all Licensed London Taxis have identically calibrated taxi meters that are regulated by Transport for London, the London Mayor, and the Public Carriage Office.
The meter calculates the fare based on:
- Time of day
- Distance travelled
- Time (minutes/hours) taken to complete the journey
