Event: The Cherry Orchard Date: May 23rd until August 15th 2009
The Cherry Orchard, 0ne of Anton Chekhov’s masterpieces, centres round the demise of the Ranevskaya family.
Madame Ranevskaya and her daughter return to Russia after a five-year spell in Paris to find that their estate is on the brink of being sold to pay off their debts.
She is perturbed by this but what upsets her most is the fact that the potential buyer has plans to tear down the magnificent cherry orchard and build a series of properties in its place.
Desperate to avoid this outcome, the family wait for as long as possible for a saviour to ride to the rescue and save their beloved copse.
The Cherry Orchard comes to the Old Vic thanks to the Bridge Project–a three-year, transatlantic partnership which will see some of the finest acting talents from London and New York onstage together.
The Bridge Project includes the Old Vic, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Neal Street Productions. The project features Sam Mendes directing The Winter’s Tale in addition to the Cherry Orchard.
