Branislav Kapetanovic and the CMC

We were delighted and very proud to be asked by the Cluster Munition Coalition to provide transportation for Branislav Kapetanovic recently. We provided taxi services to and from Heathrow Airport and to various destinations where Bransislav gave talks about his experiences and about the Cluster Munition Coalition.

Branislav Kapetanovic (born 1965) lost both hands and feet when a BLU 97 submunition exploded when he was going to destroy it at an airstrip in Serbia November 9, 2000. Branislav was a deminer working for the Army and cleared thousands of submunitions after the NATO bombing before one of them finally exploded. His greatest wish now is to see cluster munitions banned, and he is now active in the Cluster Munition Coalition.

“Cluster bombs present a greater danger for the civilian population than for the Army or “enemy” installations, they affect wide areas and continue to affect them for many, many years; I don’t expect anybody to be surprised by what happened to me – it was my duty, my job, but the majority of the people in the world being injured by these bombs are innocent civilians, a large percentage of them unknowing children.”

The Cluster Munition Coalition is an international civil society campaign working to eradicate cluster munitions, prevent further casualties from these weapons and put an end for all time to the suffering they cause. The Coalition works through its members to change the policy and practice of governments and organisations towards these aims and raise awareness of the problem amongst the public.

On 1 August, Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) members worldwide took part in coordinated campaign actions to celebrate the historic milestone presented by the entry into force (EIF) of the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Globally, events and actions were built around the slogan, “Beat the drum to ban cluster bombs!”

The Convention on Cluster Munitions – the most significant disarmament and humanitarian treaty since the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty – enters into force and becomes fully legally binding on 1 August 2010. From that date forward, states parties must implement all of the treaty’s lifesaving obligations.

Monopoly “Treasure Hunt” organised for Hen party

We were recently involved organising a two hour, two taxi “Treasure Hunt” for a Hen party based on the world popular board game Monopoly. All the the games features were incorporated into the “Treasure Hunt” including the Community Chest, streets like Park Lane, Regent street, Leicester Square, Coventry Street, Piccadilly, right through to Old Kent Road and many more were involved. There were lots of questions and challengers based on the games format and great fun and hysterics were had by all concerened…see picture above. Licensed London taxi driver saves woman in distress

Good morning

I am wondering if you can help me,

Late yesterday evening, around 11.30 pm, I was hopelessly lost in my old Audi car somewhere in the City(!) needing to collect my husband from Coleman Street, EC2.

After driving around aimlessly for over an hour I noticed a black cab (or rather dark green cab) pulling into a block of flats and stopped him to ask if he could help me by providing directions. It soon became clear it was quite a complicated route and amazingly he offered to lead me. .

He took me straight to Coleman Street, checked I was OK, and then drove away, All I know is the first part of his number plate, N980, but would very much like to have the opportunity of sending him a note or message to thank him properly because without him I would probably still be wandering the streets! I was obviously quite a long way from Coleman Street but was finding it very difficult to stop in heavy traffic to ask for help.

Can you help me to identify him so that I can hopefully direct a message of thanks to him?

We knew that there was a serious demand for a limosine style licensed London taxi service but we have been stunned by the impact that our new service has made to our forward bookings. Last week saw us provide two Mercedes Vito taxis to a wealthy Greek shipping magnate who wanted us to take his guests in climate controlled luxury to Arsenal’s game at the Emirates stadium, then wait for them while the game was playing and afterwards take them on a tour of central London and then back to their hotel..
We were also asked for several Mercedes Vito taxis to shuttle wedding guests from the church to the reception in Richmond.

Mind reading comes a step closer

In the science fiction film Minority Report, it allowed police to arrest criminals before they broke the law.
Now, mind reading has come a step closer to reality with scientists finding a way of mapping people’s brains.
British experts can track a person’s movements around a computer-simulated room simply by watching the way their brain lights up.
We are approaching the realm of mind reading,’ said researcher Eleanor Maguire.
Professor Maguire, of University College London, used a sophisticated form of the MRI machines used in hospitals to scan the brains of four young men as they navigated their way around a virtual reality room.
Each man was asked to work his way round the room several times, passing the same four points each time.
The pattern of brain activity was different for each location, allowing the researchers to work out where the men were simply by looking at the brains alone.
Professor Maguire said the finding opened ‘a whole world of possibility previously thought inaccessible to brain imaging’.
She said: ‘We asked whether we could see any interesting patterns in neural activity that could tell us what the participants were thinking, or in this case, where they were.
‘Surprisingly, just by looking at the brain data, we could predict exactly where they were in the virtual reality environment.
‘In other words, we could read their spatial memories.’This brings us ever-closer to the tantalising prospect of discovering how a person’s lifetime of experiences are coded by the neurons of the brain.
‘Co-researcher Demis Hassabis said: ‘You can predict where someone is standing by reading the patterns in their brain activity. You can track what is purely an internal thought.
‘The study focussed on the hippocampus, a small area of the brain that plays a crucial role in imagining future events, as well as memory and navigation.
Unravelling the workings of memory raises the prospect of infallible lie detector tests, while the interpretation of intentions could allow police to arrest criminals before they break the law, as seen in the 2002 film Tom Cruise movie Minority Report.
Such technology is at last 10 years away, said the researchers, who were funded by the Wellcome Trust.
The research, detailed in the journal Current Biology, could also have important medical implications.
Professor Maguire said: ‘Exploring how memories are laid down, stored, then retrieved in a healthy brain is vital if we are to understand how our memory becomes vulnerable to loss in the context of ageing, brain injury and disease.’Alzheimer’s and stroke patients are among those who could benefit, she said.
Professor Maguire’s previous work includes comparing the brains of London taxi drivers with those of bus drivers.
Scans showed the one part of the hippocampus to be bigger in the cabbies, suggesting their brains grow to cope with the detailed knowledge of London’s streets they have to accrue to get their black cab licences.
US scientists have previously used MRI scans to accurately predict which of 120 pictures a volunteer was looking at.
Researcher Dr Jack Gallant warned at the time: ‘It is possible that decoding brain activity could have serious ethical and privacy implications in 30 to 50 years.
‘We believe strongly that no one should be subjected to any form of brain-reading involuntarily, covertly, or without informed consent.’
